PART TIME GRAPHIC DESIGNER / 3732 Creative Services

Primary Function

SUMMARY: Learn and assist with duties in the Creative Services division that

are essential to meeting internal and external customer job orders per their



  1. Become familiar with and execute design, layout, illustrate, typeset and

produce electronic art to be printed.

  1. Learn to design, layout, typeset and produce electronic art for non-print

applications such as PowerPoint presentations, video productions, web

pages, and creating animation and/or interactivity for web pages using Flash

MX 2004.

  1. Assist the Graphic Designer with reviewing job requests and provide input,

when appropriate.

  1. Follow through with customer and outside vendors, proofreader, and printing

as needed to ensure desired results.

  1. Interface on a daily basis with the art manager for any direction needed on

project development, priority, and deadline requirements.

  1. Stay on task to maintain tight production schedules, for several projects at a

time, to allow time for editing, proofing, and customer approval.

  1. Enter time and cost information in a database, as requested. Complete forms

for printing requests and cost estimates.

  1. Attend requested training classes in the areas of software and hardware

skills, as department usage and software features are upgraded.

  1. Assist with ordering and maintaining supplies for Creative Services.


Required Skills

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Requires a minimum of 36 college credit

hours in graphic design or journalism related areas and/or certification from a

Technology Center in a related field.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Requires ability to effectively interpret and present

the customers information, in an understandable, eye-catching format, to target audiences. Ability to communicate creative and technical concepts and thoughts to management and customers. Requires ability to read, and understand computer and software manuals, professional journals, and technical terminology unique to the graphic arts field. Ability to write business correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Requires ability to apply moderately complex

mathematical equations as applicable. (For example: calculating proportions,

discounts, interest, percentages and volume, and applying concepts of basic

algebra and geometry.).

REASONING SKILLS: Requires ability to apply common sense understanding to

carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.



advanced experience with Macintosh programs such as QuarkXpress, Adobe

Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe PageMaker, Adobe Illustrator, and

macromedia Flash MX 2004. Special skills include artistic ability (conceptual,

design, composition, layout, color); knowledge of technical terminology unique to

the graphic arts industry; and the ability to produce electronic art correctly so that

the printing facility will be able to process it. Must be able to handle multiple

projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires extensive use of hands for typesetting,

drawing, and creating graphic materials electronically. Requires close color

vision, as well as ability to adjust focus; requires occasional lifting of up to 50


WORK ENVIRONMENT: Requires work for an extended period of time in close

proximity to a large computer monitor. Frequent use of X-acto blades. Requires

exposure to fumes of airborne particles from spray adhesives and paint thinners.

Occasional use of industrial paper cutter, 3-hole driller, laminator, hot iron and

glue gun.
