Asbestos Abatement Mechanic

Primary Function

Perform asbestos lead abatement activities in facilities owned by the Board of Regents for Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical Colleges.

Perform removal and installation of materials, asbestos and non-asbestos, including but not limited to insulation, floor tile, carpet, ceiling tile, cove base, etc.

Must be able to perform snow and ice removal tasks, and respond at any time of the day or night when scheduled by management regardless of the weather conditions. Some irregular and extra hours as needed for projects and emergencies. Emergencies frequently involve difficult working conditions. This may require work during non business hours which include evening, Saturdays, Sundays and when the University is closed.

Work place may vary between underground confined spaces to tall ladders. Work area may be very slick and hazardous. Work will mostly be performed in asbestos-contaminated areas. Special protective equipment must be worn. May work in areas that are very cold or very hot, with high humidity. Areas may also be very dirty.

Must pass pre-employment physical (at no cost) and annually thereafter. Must be able to pass respirator fit test. This position is heavy in manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally.

The incumbent will be required to provide their own basic hand tools and maintain them in good working condition.

Must use appropriate personal protective equipment as required (hard hat, vest, gloves, safety glasses, etc.). These items are provided and are not for personal use

Required Skills

High School/GED

Three years of successful work experience with two of those years working in a building maintenance organization.

Must obtain an Asbestos Abatement Workers License issued by the Oklahoma Department of Labor within first six months of hire (must pass annual written test to retain license and employment).
Have before hire and maintain after hire, a valid driver’s license. A valid driver’s license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned.

Ability to follow instructions precisely and completely. Must be able to pay proper attention to small details. Must pass pre-employment physical (at no cost) and annually thereafter. Must be able to pass respirator fit test and be able to lift in excess of 50 pounds.

Ability to become proficient in the use of “AiM’ computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS software and the use of mobile technology.


8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and as required for the position

Salary Range

$12.70 – $16.40
