Practical Nursing Instructor

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Oklahoma required.
  • Minimum of two years full-time equivalent experience practice as a registered nurse in a clinical setting preceding the first date of first employment as a nursing faculty member.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing required, or associate degree or diploma in nursing in this state and has evidence of continued progress toward a baccalaureate or higher degree in nursing with completion of a minimum of six (6) semester hours per calendar year. A master’s degree in nursing is preferred.
  • Must have the ability to communicate with area healthcare agencies, current and potential student populations, and the Practical Nursing Coordinator.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assist, develop, and facilitate updates to curriculum as it relates to practical nursing and adult students in such a manner as to provide them with marketable job skills in nursing upon completion of the training program.
  • Lead and facilitate theory and clinical courses as assigned within the nursing curriculum.
  • Work with the Coordinator of Practical Nursing and cooperating agencies in planning and implementing clinical experiences across various shifts within the nursing schedule.
  • Provide summative and formative evaluation of students in the Practical Nursing program on a scheduled basis and maintain student progress documentation in the student learning management system.
  • Act as advisor for students as assigned to monitor and mentor progression throughout the student’s enrollment within the nursing program.
  • Supervise Practical Nursing students in clinical settings (as assigned) to ensure proper nursing procedures are followed at all times, as are the procedures of the clinical facility in which the students are practicing.
  • Participate in planning the meetings of the Practical Nursing business and education committee and provide input about the relevance of curriculum and equipment used in the Practical Nursing program. 
  • Attend and participate in Practical Nursing faculty meetings as scheduled by the Coordinator of Practical Nursing.
  • Maintain continuous contact with businesses and industries throughout the district, which employ practical nurses.  Gain information regarding new techniques, or equipment which could be implemented in the Practical Nursing program as well as seek employment for graduating students.
  • Abide by all policies and procedures adopted by the Meridian Technology Center Board of Education and assist administration in implementing all policies and/or procedures governing student conduct.
  • Join and participate in professional as well as civic organizations.
  • Attend staff meetings called by the Superintendent, Director of Instruction and the Coordinator of Practical Nursing.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate inventory records and closely monitor use of inventory items in the Practical Nursing program to prevent loss, damage, or theft.
  • Utilize work time efficiently on campus or in clinical facilities. 
  • Promote Meridian Technology Center and its programs and employees at every available opportunity, with specific responsibilities for recruitment and promotion of the Practical Nursing program.
  • Maintain up-to-date equipment in the Practical Nursing program for relevant training of students.
  • Work with students involved in their respective professional student organization to develop leadership skills as assigned.
  • Assist students in securing employment upon satisfactory completion of the Practical Nursing program.
  • Report to the Practical Nursing Coordinator the need for maintenance on machines as needed and when applicable to keep the equipment in top operating condition.

  • Utilize proper purchasing procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Executive Director of Instruction, Director of Instruction, or the Coordinator of Practical Nursing.

Physical Demands

Must be able to occasionally lift items weighing 25 pounds or more and/or push items weighing up to 50 pounds on a dolly or cart.

Must be able to reach, pull, bend, stoop, and kneel to use equipment in moving patients.

Must have the strength and stamina for prolonged walking, standing, and dealing with stressful situations while supervising students in the clinical setting.

Must be able to demonstrate adequate vision (or corrected vision) to read and write.

Must have fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination to operate equipment and give patient care to demonstrate nursing skills to students (insert catheters, administer medication, handle instruments, etc.)

Must be able to hear and communicate with other people in person, over the telephone, and through computer or other communication devices as necessary.

Must be able to hear, see, and feel to accurately assess, monitor, and administer care in conjunction with students.

Must be able to travel to various communities to make business and industry visits.

Must be able to travel to Meridian’s South Campus in Guthrie, OK to assist with occasional nursing instruction.

Work Hours

The successful candidate will have the option to select a work schedule of either four 10-hour days (Monday-Thursday) or five 8-hour days (Monday-Friday). Must be willing to work additional evening/weekend hours as needed to fulfill the Practical Nursing program objectives.

 

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

The Practical Nursing Instructor will be evaluated on the previously listed responsibilities to determine satisfactory compliance. These evaluations will determine salary increases and career advancement possibilities.
